NIAB is the UK’s fastest growing crop science organisation. Based in Cambridge and East Malling, Kent, with field stations throughout England, NIAB employs around 400 people and provides research findings, scientific services and technical advice to a diverse customer base that includes Government departments, research councils, levy bodies, farmers, charitable trusts and the agri-food industry.
Given NIAB’s global reputation, strong executive team, diverse interests across multiple sectors and the changing landscape of UK agriculture and horticulture, this is a very exciting time to be the new Chair of the Board, leading the Board and working with an Executive committed to profitable and sustainable growth.
The Chair will lead the NIAB Board through the development and implementation of long-term strategic and medium-term plans, setting policy and ensuring the financial and operational efficiencies are in place to deliver world leading innovation to the sector. The Chair must therefore understand NIAB’s broad range of activities and ambitions, strategically, commercially, and culturally guiding the Board and the Executive team in delivering them whilst also staying true to NIAB’s charitable objectives.
The Chair will ensure that the Board determines the nature, and extent, of the risks the Group is willing to take to achieve its strategic objectives, reviewing on an ongoing basis the effectiveness of risk management, internal control systems and corporate governance. The Chair will act as a sounding board to the CEO in critically assessing and advising on the business strategy. The Chair will serve as an effective NIAB ambassador internally and to the agriculture and horticulture community, supporting innovative new partnerships in the public, private, and not for profit sectors.
The NIAB Chair position requires a proven leader with a demonstrable track record in at least one of business, farming, science, research or agri-technology. Suitable candidates will have experience in chairing large and complex organisations in a consensual manner with sufficient capacity for an estimated 24 days a year to fulfil the role. Above all, candidates will be passionate about continuing the positive impact NIAB has in the industry and be excited to Chair this organisation with its internationally recognised reputation for independence, innovation and integrity.
